NW meet Sept 5-6, 2015

Post by Gavan Sheridan » Sun Aug 23, 2015 10:05 am

Hi All,
An early posting to get the ball rolling on the September meet. At present the plan is to paddle in the area between Arranmore and Bloodyforeland, meeting-up at 10:00 on Saturday morning and camping offshore that night. All is weather-dependent so the final plan will only take shape during the week running up to the meet.

Well done Conor on what sounds like a great meet on a symposium scale in Connemara.

According to yr.no, the weekend of the 5th will be cloudy, but not too windy.

Certainly hoping to get up there, and to camp out on the Aranmore inner islands... ideally on Friday night (Rutland island?) as well as Sat.

Hi All,
Here are some details for next weekend's meet.
Assemble in Burtonport harbour (B718 152) at 10:00 on Saturday morning (the smaller slipway 200 m south of main pier). Consider car pooling.
Be ready to embark for 10:30, so be provisioned and packed in good time.
We will paddle north for the day covering c.22km, with a lunch break on Owey.
We are camping on Inishsirrer (B792 298) - bring your own water.
Sunday will be more or less the reverse (launching at 10:00 and hopefully landing in Burtonport by 16:00).

I plan to camp on the SE coast of Rutland Island (B714 143, or thereabouts) on Friday night with Ciaran Clissmann and others - all welcome, though you will have to make your own way out, c.1km.

All comments/observations/queries welcome here on bulletin board, at gavansheridan@gmail.com, or 087-6712335. If you have never been on an ISKA trip please contact me to give me an idea of your paddling experience. This trip is for current ISKA members who are accustomed to paddling their sea worthy sea kayaks for stretches of up to 10 - 12 km at a time.

Hope to see you there,

Gavan

That campsite on Rutland might be a little further W, and is certainly a bit further south ... about b705136, I think. Basically you paddle out from B-port, turn the headland at the SE tip of Rutland, and then follow the coast westwards and then NW. After a series of small beaches with granite outcrops, there's a sort of sandy bluff at the W end of the first beach of any size; the camping is on a nice flat machair pasture about 10 feet above beach level. IIRC, there's a small stream (really just a trickle) at the E end of the sandy step which separates the machair from the beach.

Bet I won't be able to find it on Friday, now 8-).

Despite crappy weather (in Dublin) now, the yr.no forecast is holding pretty good, if cool, with gentle enough Northerlies.

RE campfire - I have 4 bales of timber briquettes and will bring kinding etc.
1: Is there any reservations about timber briquettes being used?
2: I will need volunteers to share the load
3: Additional/Alternative fuel welcome
