Gelcoat repair, White Gelcoat, not white.... suggestions?

Post by Ivan-Galway » Thu Jul 30, 2015 10:13 pm

Hey,

I'm doing some gel coat touch ups and have a 'white gelcoat' that when seen next to the boat, is well off the brilliant white of the boat.

This is what I'm using

Has anyone used a brand o gelcoat that matches the usual brilliant white of boats?

See image (unbuffered & unwaxed)

Cheers

Hi Ivan

I have used the gel coat in a tube by Plastic Padding'. Here's a link on amazon to see the packet but I got somewhere in Ireland but can't remember where. Pure white, matches perfectly with white hull of Nigel Denis Explorer.

Hi Mary,

Yeah, that's what I'm using. Hmmm... the Tube is newly opened but has been sitting there for 2 years so maybe its gone off.

Hi Ivan
Apologies... I never thought to open the link in your post. I'll get a photo of the repairs I did to see how they compare.

Des Keaney of Deep Blue Sea Kayaking does excellent repairs. He fixed a few major cracks on my sea kayak,I couldn't even find the repairs, matches in so well. He uses gel coat that is supplied in larger volumes. There's a post about this on the bulletin board

Hi Ivan,
I have been using gelcoat maxguard White Ral 10000 I have some left so I could share. It is a pure white colour and it does not leave grey shades when dry. Let me know if you are interested. See some photos below to illustrate my recent tough ups using the gel coat mentioned above.

Hi ceres

Thanks a mill for the offer.

I'm my wisdom, I had every spider crack gauged out before realising that 'gelcoat filler' isn't gelcoat, just filler :-)

I would hack it out and redo with pure white if I had some! As one of them was long and is noticeable (see left of skeg).

If I could get some it would be great, there's no panic on it as am back on the water. Where abouts are you? I'd be glad to buy the remainder off you, split the cost!

P.s. Nice, nice job on the boat there... go-faster stripes ??
