dolphins in shannon estuary

Post by martinguilfoyle » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:50 pm

Thursday evening during a training session at the entrance to Clonderlaw bay we were seriously distracted by at least 5 no dolphins who came within 10 m of us at times. They tended to stay in 2 groups; the group of 3 appeared to consist of 2 adults and a juvenile not a young calf or whatever the young are called. There was quite a bit of activity and there may have been others
but at any one time this was the max number visible.
It was approx 1hour after H.W and they seemed to hang about Clonderlaw bay for an hour and at one point they were very close to Knock harbour itself.
I have often seen them in this area and i am told by a local fisherman that there is a bar across the bay and they often come in to feed on the outgoing tide.
And by the way the rolling and rescue session was great as well.
